Who killed Sura, and why does it matter? Context: Spartacus: Blood and Sand (Season 1)
This revelation leads directly to the uprising. Spartacus strangles Batiatus in the finale, avenging his wife and officially beginning the Third Servile War.
He believed that as long as Sura was alive, Spartacus would be distracted by his hope for a future outside the ludus. By killing her, Batiatus hoped to break Spartacus's spirit and force him to accept his fate as a champion gladiator who lived only for the arena.
This is one of the most poignant and defining moments in the Spartacus series. While the show takes liberties with historical records, the death of Sura is the catalyst for everything Spartacus becomes.
promised Spartacus he would find and reunite him with Sura if he fought as a gladiator. He eventually tracked her down, but realized that if the couple were reunited, Spartacus would inevitably try to flee. : to intercept Sura’s transport caravan.
While it initially appeared that she was killed by bandits on the road, the truth revealed in the Season 1 finale ( Kill Them All ) is that orchestrated her murder to keep Spartacus obedient and focused on fighting in the arena.
Batiatus eventually sends for Sura. However, he cannot afford for her to actually arrive and live with them. If Sura is there, Spartacus has no reason to keep risking his life for the House of Batiatus; his goal would be achieved.
