Leo laughed first. It was a wet, ragged sound that turned into a sob. Then Maya laughed, a bright, clear note that echoed off the canyon walls. It sounded exactly like the photograph.
At miles, the first sign appeared. It wasn’t a billboard or a highway marker. It was a coyote. It stood perfectly still in the middle of the two-lane blacktop, its ears swiveled forward, yellow eyes fixed on the windshield. Leo slammed the brakes. The Subaru shuddered to a halt ten feet away.

Elias turned off the car. The 4.1.2 road trip was technically over. Four days, one mountain, two people.
“Your daddy came through here twenty years ago,” Sal said, wiping the counter with a rag that was gray with age. “Had a girl with him. Long black hair. She laughed at my jokes. He looked at her like she was the whole damn sky.” Leo laughed first
"Four days of driving," Elias counted on his fingers. "One destination with no cell service. Two people deciding if the last five years were a down payment or a debt."
Leo checked his compass. Bearing 212 degrees pointed directly toward the setting sun. It sounded exactly like the photograph
They didn't get out of the car immediately. They sat in the quiet of their own driveway, two souls who had traveled four hundred miles just to find their way across the center console.
