While technically still in the army, Milkha Singh was soon sent to the (later the Sports University) in Sector 7, Chandigarh . This became his primary residence during his peak athletic years. He lived in the institute's hostels, but his real home was the grass-and-cinder track at Sector 16 , Chandigarh. Under the guidance of his coach, Dr. Howard "Hawkeye" Singh, he lived a monastic life of relentless practice, running thousands of laps on that very track.
