La storia segue ( Littlefoot ), un piccolo Apatosauro (o "Collo Lungo") nato in un mondo devastato da siccità e carestia. Quando la madre muore eroicamente difendendolo dal feroce Denti Aguzzi (un Tirannosauro), Piedino si ritrova solo in una terra inospitale. Guidato dalla voce della madre e da una "foglia stella", intraprende un viaggio verso la Valle Incantata , un paradiso leggendario dove il cibo e l'acqua abbondano.
