Born in New Mexico, USA, in 1971, al-Awlaki was raised in a prominent Yemeni family. He pursued his higher education in the United States, earning a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University and an M.A. in Education Leadership from San Diego State University. He was also a doctoral candidate in Human Resource Development at George Washington University, where he served as the Muslim Chaplain.
