Around 2018, Microsoft and hardware vendors shifted toward a new driver model to improve stability and security.

One of Realtek's most distinct features is "Jack Retasking." Unlike fixed-function hardware of the past, Realtek jacks are programmable. The driver dynamically detects when a plug is inserted and determines its type (speakers, headphones, or microphone). It then reroutes the signal path accordingly. For example, a user can configure a "Line In" port to function as a "Microphone In" port directly through the driver interface.
