Gregory Ratoff Relinquished James Bond Rights
The story of James Bond's film rights is a fascinating one, and Gregory Ratoff's involvement in the early days of the franchise is often overlooked. In 1960, Gregory Ratoff, a Russian-born American film producer and director, acquired the rights to Ian Fleming's James Bond novels with the intention of producing a film adaptation.
In May 1954, Ian Fleming was a struggling author whose first novel had yet to find global success. Desperate for cash, Fleming sold a six-month option for Casino Royale to Ratoff for just $600. This led to the first-ever onscreen appearance of James Bond: a live one-hour television episode for the CBS series Climax! starring Barry Nelson as "Jimmy Bond". gregory ratoff relinquished james bond rights
