By the mid-1990s, Director was the dominant tool for "Multimedia CD-ROMs." Major titles, educational software, and commercial presentations were built with Director. In 1997, Macromedia introduced , a browser plugin that allowed Director content to be viewed on the web. This marked the beginning of "Rich Internet Applications" (RIA).
