(The Flame Resort) was one of the most iconic and ambitious holiday complexes built during the Ceaușescu era (1965–1989) in Romania. Located in the Dâmbovicioara Valley , in the heart of the Piatra Craiului Mountains (Argeș County), the resort was officially named “Flacăra” but was popularly known by its tourism slogan: “Vacanța la Nisa” (The Holiday in Nice).
However, the flame is also destructive. It consumes oxygen; it eats away at the darkness. A flame placed in a niche illuminates the corners, revealing the texture of the walls. It brings the recess to life. But a flame without a container is a wildfire—it spreads without direction, burning until it runs out of fuel.
A niche is not merely a shelf. It is a recess, a deliberate hollow carved out of a solid wall. It is an indentation of purpose. In classical architecture, a niche is designed to hold a statue, a vase, or a lamp. It implies that the wall was not enough; that flatness required depth to become meaningful.

To stare into a dark niche is to be confronted with a choice. Do we accept the darkness as a permanent state? Or do we recognize the vacancy as a challenge?
