On August 22, 1981, the facility was officially renamed to honor Lapeer native Marguerite Lofft de Angeli (1889–1987). De Angeli was one of the most celebrated creators of American children's literature in the 20th century. She wrote and illustrated 28 books, including the 1950 Newbery Medal winner The Door in the Wall , and was a pioneer in exploring cultural diversity and racial prejudice in children's fiction through works like Bright April .
