Windows does not support the VMFS file system. If you see a popup saying "You need to format the disk before you can use it," Cancel it immediately . If you format it, your VMs are toast.

If you are just trying to mount a VMDK file (and not the whole datastore), use VMware Workstation or vmware-mount.exe utility instead. It’s much faster for single files. Windows does not support the VMFS file system
