As the ventricles begin to contract during systole, the pressure inside them skyrockets. Once the ventricular pressure exceeds the pressure in the atria, the mitral and tricuspid valves snap shut to prevent regurgitation of blood back into the atria. That sudden tensing of the leaflets and the vibration of the surrounding blood and cardiac structures produce the acoustic energy we hear as S1.
