(originally Senjō no Ōkami in Japan) is a legendary 1985 vertically-scrolling run-and-gun arcade game developed by Capcom . It is widely credited with establishing the blueprint for the military-themed top-down shooter, a genre that would later include titles like Ikari Warriors and Capcom’s own Mercs .

Before Contra , before Ikari Warriors , there was Commando . You play as Super Joe (or a generic green-bereted soldier), infiltrating enemy territory to rescue POWs. Unlike later shooters that scrolled in multiple directions, Commando forced a constant upward scroll. Enemies poured from the treeline, tanks rumbled down dirt paths, and supply planes dropped much-needed weapons. commando mame
