Much of the first film’s plot revolves around (actually the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in disguise) searching for a mysterious "child" responsible for magical attacks in New York. While everyone assumes it’s a young child, the truth is that the Obscurus host is Credence — a teenager. Grindelwald manipulates Credence, pretending to care for him in order to harness his power. When Grindelwald ultimately rejects and betrays him, Credence’s emotional devastation causes his Obscurus to rampage through the city.
