Qartulad - Reign

The choice of English “reign” rather than Georgian mepeoba (მეფობა) or mmarTveloba (მმართველობა) is deliberate. English lends global prestige and a contemporary, almost branding-like quality. Placing “reign” next to “qartulad” creates a hybrid that is ironic yet proud: the global language of power serves to crown the local language. This reverses typical colonial dynamics where English replaces local tongues. Instead, English is co-opted as a vehicle to celebrate Georgian.

During the Russian Empire and Soviet periods, Georgian retained functional domains (education, literature), but Russian dominated administration. After independence (1991), Georgian became the sole state language. However, globalization and Englishization have introduced new pressures.
