In user-driven sandbox environments, purely functional machines often transcend utility to acquire narrative “character.” This paper examines the design phenomenon of “lovely craft piston trap characters”—player-built piston-driven trap systems that are deliberately imbued with whimsical, friendly, or expressive traits despite their destructive purpose. Through a qualitative analysis of community builds (e.g., “The Hugging Floor Trap,” “The Clapping Chest”), we identify three core design principles: anthropomorphic motion, non-lethal failsafing, and decorative narrative layering.
