Throughout the narrative, the narrator pieces together the history of this relationship. It becomes clear that Addis was the great love of the mother’s life. However, due to the societal pressures and homophobia of the time, the mother eventually ended the relationship to live a "conventional" life, marrying a man and raising a family.
