Early models ran a lighter firmware version. These are generally considered less secure and lack modern API support. Hikvision generally recommends upgrading to the 5.x line, though this sometimes requires a specific "migration firmware" if the hardware revision is old.
If a firmware flash fails, the camera enters a "bootloader" mode. The firmware can be force-flashed using a TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) server tool provided by Hikvision. The camera looks for a server at a specific IP address (usually 192.0.0.128) during boot-up to accept a firmware image.
