It’s a beautiful and spiritually rewarding question. When asked for the "best" Durud Sharif (also spelled Durood or Salawat ), Islamic scholars agree that while all salutations upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) are virtuous, the are those that were taught by the Prophet (ﷺ) himself or by the Sahaba (companions) as transmitted through authentic hadith.

The Prophet (ﷺ), whose heart was connected to the Divine, sensed the magnitude of the moment. He asked, "O Jibreel, what is the matter?"

"Allah sends His Salat (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy) on the Prophet (Muhammad) and also His angels (ask Allah to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salat on him, and (you should) greet him with the Islamic way of greeting (salutation, i.e., As-Salamu 'Alaikum)." (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:56)

It is narrated in the Hadith collections, including those by Imam Hakim and Ibn Hibban, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) once sat in the company of his noble companions. The atmosphere was heavy with spiritual serenity.

Sawwar wept, "Nothing, O Messenger of Allah, except that I loved you, and whenever I heard your name mentioned, I recited a Durood."
