Today, the "BlackBerry App" concept is divided into two distinct categories: (associated with BlackBerry OS devices) and Modern Security Software (Android applications developed by BlackBerry Limited for enterprise use). The consumer app marketplace is defunct, while the enterprise software division remains a niche but critical player in security infrastructure.

BlackBerry released phones running stock Android (Priv, KeyOne, Key2). This gave users access to the Google Play Store. While this solved the "app gap," it diluted the BlackBerry software identity.
