Madelyne Pryor first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #168 (1983), created by writer Chris Claremont. Initially presented as a survivor of a commercial plane crash, she was visually identical to Jean Grey, the X-Man known as Marvel Girl who was presumed dead at the time.
