The story begins in Canton, Ohio, in 1998. High school friends (vocals/guitar) and Matt Hoopes (guitar) formed the band, naming it after guitarist Brian Pittman 's Plymouth Reliant K car. The record featured the viral hit "Must Have Done Something Right" and the intricate, multi-movement rock opera "Deathbed." The latter, an 11-minute song about a man dying of cancer, featured a guest vocal from Switchfoot's Jon Foreman and showcased a level of musical ambition that few pop-punk bands dared to attempt. Centerpiece of the album – nearly 7 minutes. Starts with a lone, out-of-tune piano, then builds into a cinematic meditation on grace, doubt, and the “free air” of forgiveness. The bridge explodes with strings and group vocals: “You don’t have to pay for what you didn’t break.” It’s the spiritual core – less explicitly Christian than early RK, but unmistakably searching.

In 2008, tragedy nearly struck. Matt Thiessen was vacationing in Winona, Mississippi, when he was bitten by a copperhead snake. He spent days in the ICU, developing a serious infection. The near-death experience deeply influenced the band's next record, Forget and Not Slow Down (2009). The album was a darker, more contemplative rock record, driven by Thiessen's recovery and reflection. Around this time, original drummer Dave Douglas left the band, replaced by Ethan Luck.
