Piezoelectric actuators are typically fabricated from ferroelectric ceramics, most commonly Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT). Inside the material, electric dipoles are aligned during a poling process. When an external voltage is applied, these dipoles attempt to realign with the electric field. This molecular reorientation causes a physical change in the dimensions of the crystal lattice.
