Phase 1: The Structure (The Skeleton) Before worrying about visuals, the paper needs a solid frame. Google Docs defaults to standard margins and fonts, which are functional but boring.
Margins & Orientation:
Go to File > Page setup . For a traditional academic paper, keep margins at 1 inch. Design Tip: If this is a creative paper or a proposal, consider Narrow margins (0.5 inches) to give yourself more design space.
Styles (Crucial for consistency):
Don't manually bold and size every header. Use the Styles dropdown (located in the toolbar next to the font type). Set your Title , Headings (H1, H2, H3) , and Normal text . Why? This automatically generates a Table of Contents later.
Phase 2: The Typography (The Personality) The "Avatar" of your paper is largely defined by the fonts you choose. Google Docs has excellent free fonts, but you have to enable them.
Expand the Font List: Click the current font name > More fonts (at the top). Pairing Recommendations: avatar google docs
