The first pillar of Villeneuve’s Dune is its production design, led by Patrice Vermette, which rejects the ornate psychedelia of Lynch’s 1984 version in favor of a functional, brutalist aesthetic. Everything in this universe feels heavy, ancient, and tactile. The spaceships do not glide elegantly; they rise like cathedrals of rust and stone, hewn from the same geological material as the planets they land on. This design choice is deeply thematic. The Atreides’ capital, Caladan, is rendered in cool grays and wet stones—a world of water where architecture is organic and flowing. In contrast, the Harkonnen fortress on Gedi Prime is a black, geometric, industrial hellscape, all sharp angles and soot. Most crucially, the design of Arrakeen, the seat of power on Arrakis, is a masterclass in environmental storytelling. It is a city carved into rock, designed not for comfort but for survival. However, this pacing allows the film to breathe,
