Mahone did not return for the 2017 revival (Season 5). Series creator Paul Scheuring felt there was for the character that wouldn't feel forced, as Mahone had already found peace by the end of the original run. His absence is briefly explained in the show: Michael intentionally avoided contacting him because the series' new villain was monitoring all of Michael's known associates. Mahone’s prison experience occurs primarily in (Sona Federal Penitentiary) and Season 4 (his detention by The Company).
Mahone does not appear, but his fate is mentioned. He is living a quiet life, working as a retired FBI consultant. He provides key intel to Lincoln and Sara about Poseidon (the new villain), confirming that Mahone survived the original series and remains free.
