When icons appear as blank white pages or "generic" files, the Windows Icon Cache is likely corrupted. You can force Windows to regenerate this database using the command line. refresh desktop icons

Right-click > View > Check Align icons to grid to keep them from overlapping. Right-click the desktop and select Refresh
