1. Common Method (Hanafi / Barelvi / Sufi tradition) This is widely practiced in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Turkey. Before entering the graveyard:
Face the graves respectfully (back not turned to them). Say: "Assalamu alaikum ahlal quburi, yaghfirullahu lana wa lakum, antum salafuna wa nahnu bil athar." (Peace be upon you, dwellers of graves. May Allah forgive us and you. You have gone ahead, and we will follow.)
Method of reciting Fatiha:
Stand facing the Qibla (direction of Kaaba), not directly at a grave. Intend to recite Fatiha for all deceased Muslims in that graveyard, especially for your relatives. Recite Surah Al-Fatiha once (or 3, 7, 11 times, depending on local custom). After Fatiha, recite a short dua : "Allahummma aati thawaba ma qara'nahu ila hadhihil arwah..." (O Allah, send the reward of what we recited to these souls.) Optionally, recite Surah Ikhlas 3 times, Surah Falaq , Surah Nas , then Ayatul Kursi . Raise hands and make dua for forgiveness and mercy for the deceased.
Key point: Reward ( thawab ) is believed to reach the dead by Allah's will.
2. Alternative View (Salafi / Ahl al-Hadith / Hanbali leaning) Based on stricter interpretation of hadith, this view holds that: kabristan me fatiha ka tarika
Reciting Fatiha or any Qur'an for the dead has no basis in the Sunnah. The dead cannot receive reward for deeds they did not do themselves. Only the deceased's own good deeds, charity given on their behalf, or children's dua can benefit them. Visiting graves is allowed only to remember death and make dua for the dead , not to recite Qur'an.
What they do at the grave:
Say "Assalamu alaikum ahlal diyar..." . Make dua directly: "O Allah, forgive him/her and have mercy on them." No recitation of Fatiha or any surah. Qibla (Kaaba) ki taraf ho aur maseed (dead
3. Important Practical & Etiquette Rules (All schools agree)
Men may visit graves; women may do so only if permitted and without wailing or excessive emotion (some scholars discourage women from frequent visits). Do not sit, step on, or lean against graves. Do not pray Salah facing a grave. Avoid shirk (associating partners with Allah): Do not ask the dead for help, blessings, or intercession directly. Keep visit short, respectful, and focused on remembrance of death and akhirah .
